WHAT'S BEEN MISSING?

Graduate pictures, that's what!  Long overdue to this site are pictures of members of the 1966 graduating class of Phillis Wheatley High School.  Well here they are!  Click on the link below to a slide show which includes the graduates of the class of 1966 and take a look at yourselves.  If you are like me and your memory is not what it used to be, you might be surprised to rediscover a classmate or two.  I apologize to those who requested this addition to the site some time ago for taking so long to get it done.  Lots of individuals have misplaced their class year books and wanted access to these pictures.  This one is for you.  ENJOY!!!

Note: To move within the slide show at this link -
To go back a slide, simply right click on any slide, then click on "reverse".  Repeat these actions (right click, reverse) to go back multiple slides.  When you go back, you can stay on a slide until you want to advance to the next slide.
To advance to the next slide, simply left click on a slide.  Left clicking also returns the show to automatic advancing.  Each slide is set to remain on display for 15 seconds before automatically advancing to the next.  Alternatively, one can advance at any time before 15 seconds elapses by left clicking on a slide

SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED

Classmates,

Our class' "Scholarships for The Lasting Legacy of Wheatley Alumni of 66" program lives on.  Through this program, our commitment to give back to deserving students continues.  Clara Lee Dobbins assumed scholarship committee responsibilities and through her diligent efforts our class recently awarded four 2009 Wheatley High School graduates with scholarships.  One thousand dollar checks were mailed on September 15, 2009 to the following schools in the scholarship recipients' names --

Scholarship Recipient

College

Kirsten Hayes

University of Texas at Austin

Chelsea Marshall

University of Texas at San Antonio

Taquiesha Page

Houston Community College

Shakira Hunt

Dillard University

Join me in congratulating these students.  Please also join me in recognizing Clara's tireless efforts to ensure that these deserving Wheatley students were rewarded.  Lastly, give yourselves pats on the backs as these funds were raised through your efforts and contributions and bring total scholarships awarded to 8 deserving Wheatley graduates and a total of $8,000.00.  Don't forget!  We look forward to receiving your help during future fund raising initiatives.

  2006 REUNION

We knew  "that old Wheatley Spirit" had lain dormant in many of our classmates for a number of years.  Your Phillis Wheatley Senior High School Reunion Committee got the graduating Class of 1966 into a mental state of being reunited with revived spirit by use of this web site,  before we physically came together in July '06 .  When we did come together, we were ready to enjoy each other and let all past misgivings, which might have existed, dissolve into thin air.  We hope that a trip through these web pages will serve as a tool to keep all classmates, those who were able to participate during July of '06 and those who weren't, motivated to physically join us the next time we reunite.  We got lots of us together again for the "greatest 40th reunion of all".   Anyone who attended will testify about the fun that was had by all.

Enjoy the mini walks down memory lane, the results of our renunion, and any future plans for our class that may be developed on the site's pages.

Phillis Wheatley defied all expectations of her class, race, and gender to become an internationally celebrated poet.  She wrote herself from obscurity of slavery into the annals of the American literary scene.  Even though she died in near obscurity, the words she wove in her lifetime immortalize her memory.  Today, her works continue to generate interest from scolars and to inspire the student of life's struggles and achievements.
